MINUTES FROM August 28, 2012, 10:00 A.M.

Regional Health Office

Members present: Stan Mitchell, Rob Adcock, Phil Green, Tom Menees, Gary Duren, Don Bloxom, Rhonda Hawks, Dale Hollowell, Tim James, Danny Jowers, Polk Glover, Bob Stephens and Lori Barker.

 

The meeting was called to order by Chairman, Stan Mitchell. Stan welcomed everyone.

 

The minutes from August 2012 meeting were presented for approval. Tom Menees made a motion to accept the minutes, and Rob Adcock seconded the motion. The motion carried.

 

Stan announced that at the LEPC Conference at Pickwick a big topic was hydrogen and sulfide suicide. This has become a popular method of suicide, and instructions on how to make this are available on the internet. Stan urged responders to take caution when approaching vehicles that are fogged up.

 

Stan asked the committee to make a list of emergency’s that might cause problems locally and bring to the next meeting.

 

Rob Adcock announced that the Northwest Tennessee Disaster Service hosted a Be A Lifesaver Day. The event was held on Saturday, August 18 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at 1260 E. Highway 22 in Union City. Rob reported that the event went well and helped spread the word about their services.

 

Danny Jowers reported that at the current time the hurricane seemed to be tracking west. He also announced the upcoming EMAT Conference in Gatlinburg to begin on September 9. Danny also noted that the vocational school is now housing all equipment. He is in the process of having the classrooms fixed up for meetings, trainings, etc. The facility will also be used as a resting place during emergencies. Once it’s complete, the LEPC will take a tour of the facility.

 

No hazmat incidents were reported.

 

Stan noted that Samburg, Union City and Hornbeak had a few fires, with Hornbeak having one fatality related fire.

 

Danny Jowers encouraged everyone to begin preparing for winter weather.

 

Rhonda Hawks noted a new strain of flu, H2N3. She encouraged everyone to keep up hand washing and stay away from sick people. She said the hospital is gearing up now for flu season. Tim James noted that he had been on a conference call with the Commissioner of Health on flu and West Nile and one case had been reported in West Tennessee.

 

Phil Green asked about the exercise with Fulton Co. EMA. Danny noted he had tried contacting the EMA and they are waiting on some funding to proceed with that. Phil also asked about the mitigation plan, Danny reported that it had been submitted.

 

 

 

 

 

At this time, Stan asked to excuse absent members. Bob Stephens made a motion to excuse absent members, Phil Green seconded that motion. The motion carried.

 

Phil Green made a motion to adjourn; it was seconded by Gary Duren.

 

The next meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the Regional Health Office in Union City.
